Here’s That Rainy Day
‘No One Cares’ is my favorite Frank Sinatra album. Not that I was ever a massive fan, but this, compared to any of his other word, is a stand-out; it ceases to be a crooner album and teeters on the edge of a sort of dark jazz. It comes across as jarringly depressing when viewed in the context of his whole repertoire (for example: there’s not a single happy song on this one and no clear single) but for a rainy night in, it’s perfect. He eschews schmaltz for bitter sentimentality and for whatever reason – perhaps for none other than it’s a hidden gem in his body of work – it totally works.
